Brief History Of TTC Services In Toronto

You should know the brief history of TTC services in Toronto for traveling through it. Toronto as a city was created in the year 1834 and is now a metropolis. Toronto was known as a leading commercial center. It had the only transportation inside the city that boasted about its stage coaches. These coaches were moving to and from the different communities. This included journey to Niagara, Kingston, London and Barrie.

Earlier the city was not having any local transportation. The means of transportation that were used in its earlier days were feet, horses and privately owned carriages. These transportations techniques were enough at that time to meet the needs of transportation for the residents of the city. In the year 1849, Burt Williams, Yonge Street cabinet undertaker and maker viewed the subjugation in the market with the rise in population level. He used his talent and skills and created four small but comfortable stagecoaches which were called omnibuses. Such vehicles can carry six passengers. It moved from Yonge Street to King Street and from St. Lawrence market to the village in Yorkville.

Each ride used to cost six pence and took around ten minutes to reach the destination. This kind of transportation solution was encouraged and popular which leaded to expansion of coaches. The omnibuses could hold ten passengers and Williams also added extra buses within a few years to the fleet. Then there was the introduction of the Toronto street railway company in the year 1861. The street railway in the city was created with the help of Alex Easton of Philadelphia. He had already traveled with various places and wanted to promote the street railways. He also wished to promote his new horse driven Haddon Car. The company got a franchise of thirty years and then started the operations of first street car route in Toronto. The street cars were pulled by horses. The horse stalls and car barn were situated in Yorkville.

Williams could not compete with such high profile services and wrapped up to move to his enterprise business. This gave the rise of present non standard TTC track gauge. Such gauges were used by the privately owned wagons also along with street cars. Toronto had to cover up with increasing development after two decades of war and depression in the 1950s. For taking care of the trouble related with funding and distribution of infrastructure, the Ontario Province collected Toronto and its suburbs under the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto. This event occurred in the year 1954. The TTC services or the Toronto Transportation Commission was included in the jurisdiction of the Metro.

In order to understand and know the brief history of TTC services in Toronto, it is better to understand its strengths and weaknesses. TTC opened the first subway of Canada only after three months of its reorganization. TTC continued to earn great profits with its extensive services.
