July 2010

In 2009, when the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) announced transit fare hikes, the York Federation of Students (YFS) and the Glendon College Students Union-Association etudiante (GCSU-AECG), along with student unions from across the GTA, mobilized and established the “Fair Student Fares” campaign. Students collected over 10,000 petition signatures and presented deputations convincing the TTC that post-secondary students were in need of a discounted transit program. Due to this hard work and commitment, students managed to win a $99.00 post-secondary student discounted Metropass.

I just called the Metropass office the morning with the intention of changing the type of my monthly Metropass from a regular adult pass to a post-secondary pass, as the TTC has promised to extend a discount for post-secondary students for months now. In fact, I was instructed to do this the last time I called the office to try to do this, as the last time I called the July pass had not been issued yet and it was too early to change my type of Metropass.

This is the experienc on bus 196A from York unversity to Downsview subway station. It was 8:45 am on 15 July 2010.

4 ladies got on bus, one of them paid $2.25 and can not find another 75 cents but a 5 dollar bill. The driver ask the lady to pay enough fare or leave the bus. The lady held 5 dollar bill and ask for the change. Since there is no change from TTC bus, the lady refuse to leave the bus and also do not want to pay another 5 dollar for the rest of her bus fare.
