Suspect charged after man spotted with gun on TTC

Toronto police have charged a 23-year-old man in connection with a firearm investigation after receiving numerous of reports of a man armed with a gun on the city’s subway system last week.
During a roughly two-hour period late Thursday night and early Friday morning, a man was seen with a gun tucked into his waistband aboard a subway train at St. George Station and as he exited the station on Bedford Street, police said in a news release Monday.
He was later seen loading a magazine into the handgun on the subway at St. George Station, police say.

Toronto is among the most congested cities in North America.

On average, journey times in Toronto are 25 per cent longer than when traffic in the city is flowing freely, according to a study released Thursday by GPS manufacturer TomTom.

TomTom used data captured on its GPS devices – the company’s database contains more than six trillion measurements – to come up with the numbers.

Among the tools are taxes on fuel, tolls to drive and levies on parking. But Metrolinx is also looking beyond straight user-pay models. The shortlist will include as well land value capture, in which governments take a slice when property becomes more valuable because of transit, and development charges. The other options includes payroll, property and sales taxes, charging solo drivers to use high-occupancy lanes and increased transit fares.

TTC to spend $700M on new streetcars

The Toronto Transit Commission has earmarked $58-million for streetcar platform and curb modifications plus another $110-million for new overhead wiring, bringing the cost of getting its system ready for a fleet of sleek new vehicles to nearly $700-million.

TTC Customer Charter

The TTC has unveiled its customer charter — a series of promises to improve service, such as new equipment and better information systems, within the year — as an attempt to improve customer relations.

Andy Byford, the TTC's chief executive officer, said in a statement Thursday the new customer charter commits the TTC to more reliable, punctual service.

Subway Train Doors Were Opened Inside the Tunnel

For the second time in a week, the doors of a busy TTC subway train opened while inside a tunnel, away from the platform.
In both cases, the train was not moving but the incidences caused significant delays.
This morning, the subway was delayed for nine minutes after the doors opened prematurely before pulling out on the southbound tracks at King Station.
The train left the station and headed towards Union Station when a red light signalled it to stop.

While western countries are proud of their democratic systems, their big cities still worry about finding the money to fund their transit systems. Infrastructure is often seriously underfunded because of competing social and political structures. Federal- and provincial-level governments levy the most of the taxes, but leave municipal government the task of figuring out how to build the city. Large cities like Toronto and Vancouver tend to feel the most pain, dealing with gridlock on crumbling roads, as well as overcrowding on aging public transit systems.

TTC going modern by automating the subway trains

Good news is slowly coming. 100 years old organization start his overhaul slowly. TTC start laying the groundwork for largely hands-off operation on one of its two lines within a few years.

After it is done, the operator can press a button to close the doors and then sit back as computers pilot the subway through the tunnel to the next station. Trains will be able to run more closely together, bringing crucial added capacity to the crowded system as riders continue to wait for the long overdue downtown relief line.
